Oneplus 6 vs Honor 10: Time to honor Oneplus?

Oneplus is known for creating affordable Flagships and they have been winning hearts of customers since past 5 years but recently, Honor entered this Budget flagship arena with a strong motif to dethrone Oneplus. Honor has been launching quite a lot devices in competition to Oneplus in past like the Honor 8, Honor 8 pro against Oneplus 5, Honor View10 against Oneplus 5T and this time, they have pitted their Honor 10 against the Oneplus 6.

Honor 10 was launched on May 15 globally at an event held in London while the Oneplus 6 was launched a day later, on May 16. The devices share a similar price bracket given that the Honor 10 retails for $415 for base 4+64GB RAM variant and $480 (Rs.32,999 in India) for 6+128GB Variant while the Oneplus 6 starts at Rs. 34,999 ($499) for the 6+128GB variant and tops at 8GB+128GB which retails for R.39,999 ($579). So the main competition is between the 6GB Versions of both the flagships though Honor 10 is priced a bit cheaper than the Oneplus 6. Let’s jump right into the comparison:

1. Build and Design

The design profile is more or less similar on both phones but the design language is totally different (I know it sounds creepy). Oneplus has offered 3 different colour options including Matte Black, Glossy black and a Shimmery white version which is good for people who prefer a different colour and different feel as well.

The Dual Camera Setup is arranged vertically in middle followed by the oval-shaped fingerprint scanner which looks more or less similar to that on Galaxy S9+ but looks a bit ugly on the back of Oneplus 6. The display comes with a notch and the device is quite heavy at 177g.

On the other hand, Honor 10 has a 15 layered glass at the back with 4 different colour options namely Glacier Grey, Midnight Black, Phantom Blue and Phantom Green. Phantom Blue is the best-looking colour options as it looks like a gradient mixture of Blue, Pink and Purple when light strikes it from various angles.

The Dual Camera setup is placed horizontally on the top left similar to the iPhone 7 Plus and the LED flash is given to the right of Cameras. The display has a notch in this as well and the bottom chin houses the UltraSonic Fingerprint Scanner. Honor 10 weighs 153g is comparatively smaller and lighter than Onplus 6.

To be honest, Honor 10 looks better in comparison to the Oneplus 6 due to its gradient colours which act as a head turner. The colour options are more eye catchy and contrasty in comparison to the Oneplus 6. Though its a matter of personal preference, Honor 10 has an edge in terms of design.

Winner: Honor 10

Oneplus 6 sports a 6.28″ Full HD+ AMOLED Display with a resolution of 2280 x 1080p and pixel density of 401 ppi. On the other hand, Honor 10 comes with a relatively smaller 5.84-inch IPS LCD display with same resolution and pixel density of 432 ppi. Both the displays have an aspect ratio of 19:9 and a notch on top that houses Front Camera and few sensors.

Honor 10 on paper has a slightly sharper display with 432 ppi but the difference won’t be visible in normal usage. Given the AMOLED display, Oneplus 6 offers deep blacks, punchier colours and is more power efficient in comparison.

Winner: Oneplus 6

3. Performance

Here’s where the Oneplus 6 edges out the Honor 10 with its latest chip from Qualcomm i.e. Snapdragon 845 coupled with Adreno 630 GPU, while the Honor 10 sports Huawei’s last year’s flagship chip i.e. the Kirin 970 which is not actually bad given that it performs on par with the Snapdragon 835 and has a dedicated NPU for performing AI intensive tasks but it simply can’t cope up with the Snapdragon 845 in terms of raw performance and handling graphics.

Kirin vs Snapdragon

One thing worth mentioning is that Kirin chips fall short behind their Qualcomm counterpart when it comes to Gaming and Thermal management, though the MALI G72 MP12 on Kirin 970 is really capable of playing almost all high-end games, we found that the games were not as smooth as on Oneplus 5t (SD835) when we pitted the Honor View10 with Kirin 970 against it due to the fact that most games are optimized in accordance with the Adreno GPU found on Qualcomm chips.

Also, OnePlus has an added advantage of better third-party development of Custom ROMs and Mods including the Google Camera HDR+ Mod which brings Pixel 2’s algorithms to your camera and is only possible on certain Qualcomm chips. Hence, you have an option to use tons of custom ROMS available for OnePlus 6 in case you aren’t happy with the current UI/ Android Version. This might not as good in case of Honor.

Oneplus 6 gaming

Honor 10 comes with 128GB of storage while the $499 Oneplus 6 comes with just 64GB of onboard storage and for extra storage, you need to shell out extra $80

Anyways, Kirin 970 will get your job done and you won’t actually complain about performance unless your friend gets a new Oneplus 6 for himself ūüėõ

Winner: Oneplus 6

OnePlus 6 has a 3300mAh Battery while Honor 10 has a marginally larger 3400mAh Battery sealed in. Now, given that Snapdragon 845 and AMOLED display to add a bit more power efficiency to OnePlus 6, the battery life on OnePlus 6 will be slightly better.

Oneplus 6 Dash Charge

Coming to the charging speeds, OnePlus has its own proprietary Dash Charging which is known for its speed (pumps 4A at 5V) while Honor 10 supports Huawei’s proprietary SuperCharge tech and comes with a SuperCharger in the box (fuels in 4.5A at 5V) which is slightly faster than Dash Charge. Honor claims that it can charge more than 50% in less than 30 minutes which seems quite promising.

Honor 10 Charging Speed

Both the devices have average battery life, but OnePlus 6 has an edge being more power efficient.

Winner: OnePlus 6

Both the devices come with a dual Camera Setup at the back. Oneplus 6 comes sports a 16MP Sony IMX519 primary sensor that has an aperture of f/1.7 aided by OIS coupled with a 20MP secondary sensor with same f/1.7 aperture. Th purpose of the 20MP secondary sensor is to collect depth information and nothing else. Oneplus claims to have increased the sensor size by 19% than on 5T for improved low light photography. a 16MP selfie shooter is given at front.

Honor 10 has a 16MP RGB Sensor coupled with a 24MP Monochrome sensor, both with an aperture of f/1.8 aided by AI 2.0 and semantic image segmentation technology. It also has a 24MP Selfie Shooter as well. Honor 10 has an edge in terms of the Camera app, dedicated pro mode and the implementation of AI.

On paper, while the Honor 10 has more megapixels, Oneplus 6 has a wider f/1.7 aperture for more light and OIS for stabilization.

Though we expect Selfie Camera to be better on Honor 10, it is too early to comment on Rear cameras.

Winner: Tie

6. User Interface

This is one part where both the devices are miles away from each other. Honor 10 runs on company’s own EMUI 8 based on Android Oreo while the Oneplus 6 runs on Oxygen OS. EMUI is sort of more customizable and skinned UI, it comes with few additional features like Screen Recording, Smart Navigation, Gestures and per app-based controls while Oxygen OS is a more of Stock Android equipped with Few necessary customisation features.

Now, it boils down to your personal preference that what do you prefer. I personally like the EMUI more than Oxygen OS which is not the case with most people.

Winner: Oneplus 6

7. Added perks

With the Honor 10, you get a much faster Ultrasonic fingerprint scanner that is located at the front while the one on Oneplus 6 is placed at the back, looks much better than Oneplus 6, feels smaller and lighter as well, has better after sales service, extra storage compared to base variant of Oneplus 6, priced low and has better front camera.

While, on the other hand, Oneplus 6 has Water Resistance, something which is not present in Honor 10, has a larger AMOLED display, packs latest Snapdragon 845 under the hood, has an option of 8GB RAM and Avengers Edition to choose upon, has better third-party development, better Resale Value and will get faster updates as well.

Oneplus 6 Water Resistance

(Oneplus 6 has access to Android P beta program to experience android P beta version)

*Pricing and Conclusion

  • Base variant (6+64GB) of the Oneplus 6 is priced at Rs.34,999 and the 8+128GB version retails for Rs.39,99 (sales start from 12PM IST,May 21 on Amazon)
  • Honor 10 comes at Rs.32,999 for 6+128GB Configuration in India.

Coming to the conclusion, if you are strict on budget, don’t care about third-party development, are inclined more towards taking Selfies, conscious about how your phone looks and don’t bother much about android updates then Honor 10 is the way to go.

And if you can not compromise on performance, need OIS for Videography, care about water resistance, are a hardcore gamer, and if you are into custom ROMs and development then there is no better option available at that price except Oneplus 6.

Asus Zenfone Max Pro 6GB Variant is different from 4GB Variant, Here’s How!

Recently, Asus launched its brand new contender Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 (huh…name is quite long) which comes in 3 different RAM and Storage variants priced differently.

We already covered the Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 in our previous post including its specs, features, and pricing. To Read More about Asus Zenfone M1, Click Here!

The Pricing is as follows:

  • 3GB RAM and 32GB Storage Variant is priced at Rs 10,999
  • 4GB RAM and 64GB¬† Storage Variant is priced at Rs 12,999
  • 6GB RAM and 64GB Storage Variant is priced at Rs 14,999

Now, the catch here is that the RAM and Storage are not the ONLY Differences here! Though they have Same 5.99-inch FullHD+ IPS display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 SoC, 5000mAh Battery etc, things go different in terms of the camera performance!

What’s Different?

Now, the 3GB and 4GB RAM Variants are same in every aspect except for the difference in storage and RAM.

But, the 6GB RAM version varies in terms of Cameras than the other two variants.

The 3&4GB Variants of Zenfone Max Pro have a 13MP +5MP Dual Camera Setup at the back and sport a 8MP Selfie Shooter while the 6GB Variant comes with much better 16MP+5MP Dual Rear Camera Setup along with a 16MP Selfie Shooter.

Now, while the 3&4GB Variants are going for sale on May 3 in India via Flipkart, the 6GB variant will be available for sale hopefully by the end of June (as per our latest reports)

In initial testing, many of our friends who reviewed it found that the camera on Zenfone Max Pro (3&4GB) is not that good in low light situations and simply can’t match the camera performance of Redmi Note 5 Pro.

Also, Asus at the time of launch revealed that the device is still running on pre production software which will be refined more via an OTA update by April 27 which will improve Camera algorithms and may also come with Asus Pixelmaster app to replace the stock Snapdragon Camera app.

So, we have 3 major things to know here:

  • Cameras on Asus Zenfone Max Pro 3&4GB Variants will be improved via OTA
  • The Cameras on upcoming Asus Zenfone Max Pro 6GB variant will have better cameras as discussed above
  • The main competition to the Redmi Note 5 Pro is the Zenfone Max Pro 6GB Variant which hopefully should fight neck to neck in terms of Camera Performance too!

So this was all about the differences between different variants of the new Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1.

Overall, we liked the device and its price but not its name which is too long and it would have been better if Asus named it as Zenfone M1 instead of AZM Pro M1.

Honor v10 vs Honor 10

Honor View10

Both the devices, Honor 10 and View10 have totally different appeals in terms of design language.

Honor 10 comes with a shiny, reflective Glass Back with Gradient Color options and a Notch at the front, while Honor View10 has nothing special, it comes with an Aluminium Back panel with minimal design and comes with Matte finish. In terms of looks and design, Honor 10 is a clear winner as it looks more appealing, will have a premium feel on holding due to the glass back and curved edges and has more modern design profile but Honor View10 has a plus point in terms of durability.

Winner: Honor 10

Honor 10

Honor View10

Honor View10 has a 5.99-inch Full HD+(2160×1080)¬† IPS LCD with 18:9 aspect ratio and maximum brightness of 435 nits while on the other hand Honor 10 comes with a 5.84-inch Full HD+ (2280√ó1080) IPS LCD with 19:9 aspect ratio and a Notch at the Top. Brightness on View10 is very average and we expect that maximum brightness on Honor 10 will be better than View10. Also, The notch on Honor 10 gives a modern look and more screen to body ratio but Some people do not prefer smartphones with a notched display, so this boils down to personal preference.

Winner: Tie

Huawei Kirin 970 Features and Specs

Both the devices are very similar in terms of performance as they both have Huawei’s HiSilicon Kirin 970 SoC which is a flagship SoC and performs very good. The difference is in terms of memory type used, Honor V10 has UFS 2.1 mem0ry while Honor 10 has emmc 5.1. Honor View10 will be better in terms of performance due to faster Read and Write Speeds while Thermal Management will be a little bit better on Honor 10.

Winner: Honor View10

4.Battery Life

Huawei Supercharge Technology, 5V 4.5A

Honor 10 has smaller 3400mAh battery compared to View 10’s 3750 mAh Battery, not a big difference but View10 will give you around 30-60 minutes of extra Screen on Time and better Standby. Both the devices support Huawei’s Supercharge Technology (4.5A and 5V) and will charge at the same rate.Note: Honor View10 ships with a slower 9v 2A Charger in India instead of SuperCharger.

Winner: Honor View10

Honor V10

This is the area where Honor 10 clearly beats View10. Honor 10 comes with a 16MP RGB sensor paired with a 24MP monochrome one, both having f/1.8 aperture while View10 has 16MP RGB and 20MP Monochrome setup with same f/1.8 aperture.

Also, Honor 10 has a 24MP Selfie Shooter compared to 13MP on View10 and comes with AI 2.0 which is an improved version of AI implementation in previous Honor devices.

Do Note that Honor 10 has AI based Stabilization for Videos while View10 even lacks EIS. Our choice will be Honor 10 over View10, anytime!

Winner: Honor 10

6. Additional Things

Honor 10 comes with a dedicated AK4376A audio processor that can output 7.1 sound via the headphone jack while there is no such implementation on Honor View10.

Also, Honor 10 weighs just 153 grams compared to View 10’s 186-gram weight which does make a difference.

Winner: Honor 10

Honor 10 Images

Our choice will be Honor 10 as you get more pleasing looks, superior Cameras, Improved version of AI, AIS, Dedicated Audio Chip, Lightweight, and the position of Latest Honor Flagship.

But for some people, Honor View10 might be a perfect daily driver due to Better Metal Build Quality, Faster Memory, Bigger Battery and comparatively little lesser price!

Now, everything boils down to personal preferences, hence it would be better if you choose the best device for you based on your priorities.
